  • CLUB SERVICE will honor one of our own in June at our President’s Night and
  • NEW GENERATIONS which needs to be developed within our Club during this coming year.

JOHN L.S. NORTHROP VOCATIONAL SERVICE AWARD

Mary Jo Podgurski introduced Dr. James M. Longo, professor and chair of the Department of Education at W&J as this year’s recipient. The award includes a $1,000 grant to the charity of the recipient’s choice. Dr. Longo is recognized for his special talents in research, writing and teaching, creating the inclusive classroom, theory of multiple intelligences and the important role of women in the classroom. With Dr. Longo today was his wife, MaryJo Harwood sharing in his honor.

ROY R. GILLESPIE COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

John Hopper introduced Michael “MJ” Markley as this year’s recipient and the awarding of a $1,000 Paul Harris Fellow to the Rotary Foundation. MJ was active in forming the coalition to fight the opioid epidemic now known as “Washington County Fight Against Heroin” to inform the community of the scope, costs and number of deaths attributed to this pandemic. MJ also launched the Harmon Life Center, a recovery center, in the City of Washington. Mike had as his guest, Michele Smith, his Mother who has encouraged him to launch this initiative.

ANDREW G. URAM INTERNATIONAL SERVICE AWARD

Angeline East introduced Buba Misawa, a professor of Political Science and Director of International Studies at W&J. Dr. Buba feels a true connection to the Rotary Club of Washington for helping him with his projects especially providing shoes to be shipped to West Africa as well as articles of clothing.

HAPPY $$$$$$:

  • John Tecklenburg happy to have had dinner with two former Presidents, Jefferson and Madison along with Secretary of the Treasury Albert Gallatin. It is obvious these were character actors and NOT the real people although the gentlemen were dressed in the era and they enjoyed the Union Grille for dinner and meeting and greeting fellow guests at the Grille.
  • Karen Reese happy dollars to honor today’s recipients. The Community Service Award is named for Karen’s Dad, Roy Gillespie a former Rotary President and Past District Governor.
  • Susan Priest attests to the fact that cataract surgery is painless and wonderful and she can now see when she wakes up in the morning!
  • Dr. Buba happy for his award and he recognized both Andy Uram and John Northrop for their International work.
  • Jim Uram not so happy today but found a $$$ for the Breeder’s Cup and he is leaving to go to Kentucky for the weekend to celebrate this racing event.
  • Nan Sninsky just happy this all came together and to thank the attendees and the Rotarians who helped her to “pull it off”.
  • Dorothy Tecklenburg happily announced that at One Rotary Summit all of the Washington Rotarians in attendance agreed Andy Uram was an inspiration to all of us.
  • Dr.Kirkpatrick happy to be representing President Knapp and happy that Dr. Buba and Dr. Longo are being recognized.
  • Mary Jo Podgurski $15 Happy Dollar$ for her 7 students here for the program and for lunch; $3 for the awardees and for Ken Baker for going with her to take 41 kids to see the movie “Hate You Give” and she recommends that we all see it.
  • Ken Baker told us Mary Jo stole his thunder but he feels the movie “Hate You Give” has not been advertised as much as it should be and he suggests all go to see it.
  • John Hopper happy for MJ receiving the award and for Michele Smith being able to be here for MJ and it’s amazing she has no gray hair!
  • Angeline East thanks Bob for being here today and that their son is finally moving out of the house and very HAPPY to be celebrating her Birthday today with all of the Club.
