  1. Dictionary Projectis going well and looking forward to wrapping it up within the next few weeks
  2. One Rotary Summit is this Saturday October 20 at Cal U Convocation Center; there is no fee just the need for us to give numbers to provide breakfast; great ½ day (8:30 to 12:30) to learn more about Rotary. Contact Bill Price about carpooling, meeting at the Beau St Park ‘n Ride by 7:30. So far we have 6 interested…we would love to have 6 more?
  3. Foundation Celebration Dinner at Nemacolin Country Club on November 10. The theme is ISLAND and all are asked to wear Island Attire (no shorts or bathing suits). Registration is online, try to attend and support the Foundation. You can also support by placing an ad in the program…contact Susan Price ( to place an ad or to donate a basket for the Foundation Auction. As a Club we are donating a large basket of Paradise Confectionary products…it is a beautiful and delicious item valued at $150+ If you have questions don’t hesitate to ask!
  4. Service Awards Luncheon on October 30 in the Ballroom…JUST a REMINDER…make an effort to attend as we are presenting the awards to 2 members of the W&J faculty along with a well deserving member of the Washington Community. Encourage visitors to attend also … this is a wonderful PR event for all of Rotary.
  5. Inter-Club Service Award Luncheon is scheduled in the ballroom hosted by ZONTA. Board will select a worthy candidate to represent us based upon service to OUR club.
  6. Support our neighbors: McMurray sponsoring a Bowling event at the Meadows Bowling Lanes on October 26 at 6:00; Canonsburg-Houston-Southpointe is again taking pie orders with a deadline of November 8 and the pies will be delivered to our meeting on November 15. Just a note, they are delicious and they also have pumpkin rolls.

  • Ken Baker:happy to announce and invite all to the special JAZZ Brunch this Sunday at the President’s Pub; Gershwin fans now HEAR this.
  • Justin Dandoy: $5.00 because he missed a few weeks as this is such a busy time on campus getting students engaged; Big Brothers – Big Sisters having an event, Corks for a Cause at the J&D storefront behind Primanti’s; The Literacy Council is looking for an Executive Director and if interested or you know anyone who may be, check the website for specifics; went to a Dictionary Event and it was fun and went well, kids were fun.
  • Susan Priest: Just completed a great vacation, River Cruise and happy to be a member of the greatest Rotary Club in Western PA.   (Do you think our guest heard this???)
  • Judge Gladden: Rachel’s pie sold for $2000 at the David Bradford Whiskey Dinner and following that news a generous person in Washington offered Rachel another $2000 for the Bradford House if she would be willing to bake him an Apple Pie. Know Rachel we all believe she will if she hasn’t already taken care of it.
  • Bill Messler: happy to have a former employee return and allowing him some more freedom; heading to Las Vegas with his “accountant” and from there on to California to spend time with his son and his family.
  • Joe Piszczor: encouraging people to attend One Rotary Summit on Saturday as it will be a great program; also happy to have been quoted on WJPA regarding the stock market
  • Bob Hillberry:  $2.00 for all of the good news being shared today! Always proud to be a member of this Club
  • John Tecklenburg: GOOD news that Verizon finally completed our phone repairs after 3 weeks (President Bill reminded John they need to pay that phone bill to have service….just kidding); BAD news John shared that Dorothy had to deliver dictionaries without him.
  • Mike Pecosh: Met someone on Jamaica trip and it turns out their god-daughter is his office administrator, they also met a couple from WashPa. It really is a small world. Also Mike happy to report his wife is starting a new job and will be moving from California University to WVU.

PROGRAM:  WATCHFUL SHEPHERD help protect children and families in danger of abuse or neglect
Donna Nardine and associates from The Watchful Shepherd USA presented an interesting and very thought provoking program.
Watchful Shepherd is a non-profit family abuse prevention using a device placed in the home. This device enables children and victims to protect themselves from abuse in the home. The program proposes to find “practical” ways to protect an innocent life. Child protective service and other agencies identify cases where help is needed. With a staff of volunteers trained to follow protocols each victim will be issued a wristband that activates an electronic alarm unit installed in their home. These units can be used to help “monitor” Domestic violence, Substance abuse, Kinship Care, Foster parents, Runaways. The equipment is provided by Connect America. The program has served thousands of children and families.
Since 1993 there have been NO reported cases of abuse where the monitors have been installed. These devices are available throughout the state and in neighboring states. Due to the level of technology available the devices can be used virtually everywhere there is a need.
