PROGRAM:  Changes in Dentistry

Past District Governor and local Rotarian, retired Dentist Tom Drewitz gave a program on the “History of Dentistry”. As expected, Tom did a great job with humor, pointing out historic developments such as:
1850 – Willoughby identified microbial basis of dental decay
1908 – G.V. Black on the science of filling a tooth and that diagram was still being used when Tom was in Dental School
1913 – Alfred C. Jones the world’s first oral hygiene school
1950 – First fluoride tooth paste marketed and communities began fluoridation of the water
1974 – Beginning practice of dental implants
2017 – Greatest change in dental practices with special methods of correcting teeth, caps, crowns, and wanting to “fix it and make it look good”.  Insurances and invisalign  in the place of braces and the speed of corrections.
