President Rich Podgurski:
  1) PONY Picnic was a success at the Kiwanis Pavilion, not many volunteers needed but 4 Rotarians served
  2) Dictionary Project underway and under the leadership of Ellen Hough
  3) Rotary Awards for Community Service, Club Service, Vocational Service and International Service all nomination forms are on the website but Brandi Butler has the forms with her today; due back September 18 and the Awards Luncheon is scheduled for October 24; all nominations will be reviewed by the Board members September 26.
This is very important to our Club and everyone is encouraged to give serious consideration when nominating and justifying the nomination.
  4) DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S VISIT is scheduled for August 29. DG Steve Arnowitz has two major projects involving clean water and updated filters as well as back packs with school supplies for Venezuela. Due to the present political unrest there we will concentrate on providing school supplies for the Washington Park Elementary 4th Grade.
These 4th Graders received dictionaries last year so it was decided to continue our contact with them and provide school supplies.
We ask all Rotarians to consider donating $10 to help fund this program. We will accept donations at our next three meetings. We will purchase these supplies through Rotarian Brad Montgomery. Your support of this is greatly appreciated.

PROGRAM:

Susan  Priest introduced MaryJo Podgurski and Bill Mesler for this week’s installment of “Get To Know Your Rotarians”.
MaryJo started with how she became so interested in being a nurse at a very young age. She worked in Pediatrics and then Children’s Hospital and then on to New York as a Pediatric Oncology Nurse. One experience led to another and she became interested in teaching especially teens following her experience of working with a 12 year old foster child who gave birth and felt unloved, unwanted and frightened. With this sad experience MJ went on to a decision to teach and mentor teen about sexuality and how to work through unexpected pregnancy. As a well-known and respected speaker and author, MaryJo has written and published books such as Real Talk for Real Teen Parents.  A Rotary District Grant helped to produce and interactive coloring book for children and adults. Her current series of books “Nonnie Talks About…(pregnancy, death, race, puberty)” all are enhanced by illustrations for each book done by Alice Burroughs. Click on them for ordering information.
Bill Mesler talked about his love for family (wife, children and grandchildren). Bill was born August 15, 1943 and today was his birthday! Bill grew up in Toronto Ohio and Bentleyville where his Mother operated a well-known dairy bar. Bill became a barber after graduating from high school, joined the Navy to see the world and found himself in New Zealand. Bill then found his way into the printing business and developed Quality Quick printing, became civic minded, active in his Church (Immaculate Conception) and happy to continue community service as a Rotarian. We are happy to have you as a Rotarian Bill and there is always something brewing in that mind of his!!

PLEASE REMEMBER:

  • Nominations for Club Awards or Brandi will hunt you down
  • August 29 District Governor Steve Arnowitz we will try to be on our best behavior
  • $10 Donation for the support of our local School Supplies effort at the next 3 meetings
