ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  1. Schedule for souvenir stand is complete and if you are unable to fulfill your signed commitment please arrange for someone to take your spot on the schedule.
  2. PONY Picnic is Friday, August 10 at the Kiwanis Pavilion at the Washington Park. Please plan to help with the setup between 11:45 and 12:00. Don’t feel as though you must come to WORK, come for lunch and to enjoy meeting and mixing with the players and their coaches. All Rotarians are invited for lunch!
  3. CASH BASH scheduled for Saturday, September 15 and tickets will be available next week. Remember this is not Joe’s Cash Bash he is just the only person who totally understands it enough to organize it but it is for all of us to help SELL, SELL, SELL and work it. If you use Social Media let it help you to SELL and if you don’t understand how to use this form of technology…wait until next week! Bring your phones and get ready to learn!
  4. Nan Sninsky is taking over the Service Awards program and has the nomination forms for those awards (Community, Vocational, and International) and these forms are also available on the website. Brandi has handled this in the past and is mentoring Nan through it…let’s help them make a smooth transition. The luncheon is scheduled for October 30 in the Ballroom and more details will be coming along with a listing of past recipients. Remember to focus on non-Rotarians although members are eligible.
  5. Susan Priest announced a couple of interesting and informative meetings in the next two weeks:
    • next week MaryJo has a group of teens willing to come in and teach us how to use Social Media and not just to Sell, Sell, Sell but to help some of us (neophytes) to transition to that level of technical knowledge;
    • on 8/14 we will have a seminar of sorts of “All you Ever Wanted to Know About a Cash Bash” but were afraid to ask!
  6. Following this regular meeting will be a meeting with the new food service company, Bon Appetit to acquaint us with what changes we may encounter. Our contract is with W&J, not the catering company and it is hoped some alterations will be made with the lunch offerings. It was also stated there will be no cost change for one calendar year.

HAPPY DOLLAR$$$$$$$$

  • Karen Reese: happy to announce her nephew Noel Gillespie has been hired as a coach for the Erie BayHawks basketball team.  And it has to be true (not that it wouldn’t be) because the writer “googled” him to be sure the information was accurate! Congratulations again to one of the members of the Gillespie Family!
  • Susan Price: happy to have made the “Rotary Road Trip” to Pocahontas PA for Mass….prayed the whole way there as it was a long trip and glad we had a full tank of gas! Great fellowship with Rotarians from across the District and enjoyed a wonderful breakfast at Yoder’s B and B in Myersdale.
  • Nan Sninsky: $4.00 hoping for a foursome for TRIPIL gold fundraiser at Lone Pine CC on Monday, September 24. Glad to be back today after being in Washington DC to walk to the Capital and to visit with legislators to increase awareness for the continued support for the Americans with Disability Act and the need for its enforcement across the country.
  • Mary Jo Podgurski: had multiple Happy Dollars given by Lily; some dollars for 5 grand babies who make her very happy; happy that Lily is at the meeting and thanks for welcoming the young folks next week.
  • Rachel Lozosky:  Thanks to Kathy Sabol for tickets to the Great Gatsby event at the Century Inn this past Friday and a shout out to Tripp Kline who was the emcee and auctioneer but especially happy to have won the Trivia Contest that night.
  • Tripp Kline: happy because the Century Inn is back and great, the event was great and people really dressed the part for the Gatsby Era and suggests everyone keep their eye open for the advertising for next year’s Gatsby. Query to  Susan Price and why would you go to this Pocahontas? Isn’t there a church closer???

PROGRAM: Pony Baseball

Karen Reese introduced the speaker, Chase Johnston, who is an intern for Tournaments Inc and PONY Baseball.
Chase is a student at Waynesburg University with a major in Sports Media and an offensive line coach for Carmichaels High School football.
Tournaments INC is a group of local volunteers who organize and run the PONY Tournament.
PONY HISTORY: Founded in 1951 by Lew Hayes and Joe E. Brown to transition players from Little League to high school level baseball. In 1953 the games moved from the Wash Hi field to Lew Hayes Field. In 1984 the games were rotated throughout the USA but then moved back to Washington.
As an intern Chase admits it is either “sink or swim” with the many activities involved in the planning and scheduling of the activities and hoping the weather cooperates.
This year is an exceptionally Family Friendly event with bands, mascot night, Pirates Night, WVU Night, Home Run Derby and Base Running competition.
DICKs is again a sponsor and without their support it would be a drain on the entire program.
Games can be streamed on MLB.com and 5 games will be on ATT Sportsnet.

LOOKING FORWARD TO THE PONY WORLD SERIES AND WE THANK CHASE FOR HIS PRESENTATION AND ENTHUSIASM

ROTARY ROAD TRIP:

Sunday July 29 a group of Rotarians from District 7330 converged upon the community of Pocahontas to attend Sunday Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
The Mass was said by Fr. Benoit Alloggia, a member of the Latrobe Rotary Club
Few have heard about Pocahontas but Dave Hart has been there and now Bill and Susan Price can check it off of their bucket list! The group went in support of Fr Benoit who splits his time between St Vincent College and Rome. As part of his assignment in Southwestern Pennsylvania he says Mass at St. Mary’s in Pocahontas and St Michaels in Salisbury.
This unique “tour group” included 3 PDGs, 2 AGs, 2 Club Presidents and representatives from 7 Clubs. Following church services and before heading back to civilization as we know it, we all had brunch at Yoder’s B&B in Meyersdale.
If you want directions to Pocahontas check with Bill Price and before leaving be certain you have a full tank of gas!
